What is a brow lift?
At our plastic surgery office in Miami, FL, our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Jeffrey LaGrasso, provides his patients with brow lift surgery, and helps them attain a more youthful facial appearance. Commonly confused with a forehead lift, because they both use a lift technique to target the upper face, a brow lift is a distinct procedure using different techniques that focus on correcting droopy upper eyelids that cause the patient to look tired, sad, or angry. Dr. LaGrasso can also decrease the look of bags and hollow areas under the eyes with this surgery. If the patient is a candidate for a forehead lift, the incision will be made endoscopically, and the forehead will be pulled up which helps lift the brow at the same time. His patients report feeling younger and confident with this procedure and remark that the aesthetic results are significantly noticeable. Dr. LaGrasso is meticulous and very experienced in this surgical procedure. Call today, and schedule a consultation if you would like to learn more about which brow lift is right for you.
What Types of Brow Lifts do you offer?
There are a number of surgical methods to raise your eyebrow skin for a younger, attractive appearance. Brow lift procedures most commonly used are the coronal, trichophytic, temporal brow lift, and endoscopic brow lift. Each technique has advantages and disadvantages, and Dr. LaGrasso selects the method based on your particular anatomy and aesthetic needs.
Coronal Brow Lift
An incision that hides the scar within the hair area is the coronal brow lift. The cut is made from one ear to the other, running along a few inches above the patient’s hairline. The eyebrows are then repositioned to correct the tired, aged appearance of the patient by pulling the muscles up. With this technique, the hairline is also positioned higher. The coronal brow lift is the classic brow lift, in which an incision is made behind the hairline in the scalp. Skin is removed from the hair-baring portion of the scalp, and the eyebrows and hairline are raised. This approach has the advantage of hiding the incision within the scalp and generally has longer lasting effects. The results are typically subtle, just enough to stretch the droopy eyelids, but not lifted too severely, which would result in a shocked, wide-eyed look. The disadvantages include an increased hairline. For some patients, a brow lift with a long incision in the scalp offers an emotional disadvantage.
TRICHOPHYTIC Brow Lift
A hairline brow lift or a trichophytic brow lift, which is very similar to the coronal brow lift. While repositioning the brow and upper eye lids, the trichophytic brow lift offers a patient a modification to the coronal brow lift as the incision is placed within the hairline, and only the brow is elevated (with the advantage of the hairline staying in place). The disadvantage of this lift is that it is not a great option for patients with a receding hairline, as the incision scar will be seen.
Temporal Brow Lift
The temporal brow lift is a procedure in which small incisions are made in the temporal region of the forehead and scalp. Most of the incision is hidden in the scalp with a small portion located on the side of the forehead. This approach has the advantage of being smaller and requires less dissection. The disadvantages are that the surgery only lasts 3 – 4 years, only the outer portion of the eyebrow is raised, and part of the eyebrow near the nose is not raised. There may be a small scar on the side of the forehead. This approach is an option for older patients with deep forehead wrinkles wishing to avoid the extensive dissection of a coronal or trichophytic brow lift.
ENDOSCOPIC BROW LIFT
For a less invasive procedure, our plastic surgery office also offers an endoscopic brow lift. This procedure is for lifting the brow without removing any skin. With several small incisions behind the hairline, the forehead skin is repositioned and fixed in an elevated position with an endoscope and specialized instruments (a tiny camera at the end of a thin tube will be inserted to allow the surgeon to operate via a monitor). This approach has the advantages of providing the patient with smaller incisions that are hidden in the scalp, and sutures are placed underneath the skin to help lessen scars. The healing from this technique is quicker compared to the classic brow lifts. The disadvantages are that the hairline is elevated, and the results last 1 – 3 years. This procedure is a good option for patients in their mid to late 30’s.

Am I A Candidate For A Brow Lift?
As we age, our skin elasticity decreases, creating lines and wrinkles in addition to causing many portions of the face to sag. This is especially apparent in the upper face and impacts both women and men. When looking in a mirror, do you appear angry and tired, or notice deep lines between the eyebrows? Maybe you are bothered by a generally sagging brow line. If these problems sound familiar, a brow lift at Jeffrey LaGrasso M.D. may be the right aesthetic treatment for your needs. During your consultation with Dr. LaGrasso, he will examine you, listen to your concerns, and help you decide if a brow lift is right for your cosmetic needs and goals to achieve a refreshed, rejuvenated appearance.
Eyebrow Incision
This surgical technique places the incision along the natural upper eyelid crease or the brow’s hairline. The focus is to trim away excess skin and tighten the remaining skin and underlying tissues to create a rejuvenated facial appearance. The weak tissues will be reattached to the brow bone by sutures or attached with temporary tiny hooks placed internally where the muscles will cling and heal into a new position. This treatment doesn’t simultaneously resolve any issues of wrinkles on the upper forehead.
How Are Brow Lifts Performed?
The incision techniques used during a brow lift procedure depend on the severity of sagging, the skin condition and the hairline location. There are classic incisions, which may be located on the upper eyelid, or a coronal incision, which runs from ear to ear underneath the patient’s hair. A less invasive treatment is possible with an endoscopic brow lift.
What can I expect During/After Brow Lift Surgery?
A brow lift is performed under general anesthesia at an accredited surgical facility. It can last between 1 – 2 hours. Patients are sent home after surgery and advised to limit movement for up to 2 days. There will be some bruising and swelling that may be present on other areas of the face, such as the cheeks. Patients will be able to go back to a normal routine within a week. Strenuous activities must be avoided as it may affect healing. It is quite normal to feel as though the face is out of symmetry, but within 3 – 6 months, patients will see the optimized results, and look and feel younger with a rejuvenated outcome.
Brow Lift FAQ
Will my results look natural?
The ultimate aim of a brow lift procedure is to give the face an appearance that is fresh and youthful. Dr. LaGrasso is an expert who ensures that results are subtle enough so that the face doesn’t look surgically treated. An experienced facial surgeon of his caliber will have a thorough understanding of the internal structure of the face and will create results that are natural and prevent a wide-eyed or hyper-alert look.
Is BOTOX a better option?
BOTOX® is a nonsurgical cosmetic treatment that targets forehead wrinkles. While it does an exceptional job of smoothing out lines and wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes, it does not correct the drooping of the skin folds around the eyes. Depending on the patient’s case, BOTOX is worth trying initially to see if this treatment satisfies the patient’s aesthetic goals. If BOTOX does little to the cosmetic issue, then a brow lift may be considered. Many patients benefit from a combination approach using surgery and BOTOX to attain their desired outcomes.
Will I have visible scarring?
Because the incisions are made in areas that can act as concealer, often the hair or natural crease of the face, scarring is generally not obvious. Dr. LaGrasso and his Miami, FL team will make sure that the incisions are carefully placed to minimize the effects of scarring.
Should I get a facelift or brow lift?
Dr. LaGrasso and his team will initially evaluate the face and recommend the best approach. A brow lift enhancement is confined within the upper area of the face while a facelift also improves the appearance of the lower area of the face including the chin and the cheeks. Depending on the severity of the wrinkles and the sagging, a full facelift may be a better approach.
Can a brow lift be combined with other procedures?
Yes, a brow lift can often be combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures like eyelid surgery or a facelift for a more comprehensive enhancement. Dr. LaGrasso will assess your specific needs and discuss the options that can help you achieve your aesthetic goals. Combining procedures can sometimes offer a more harmonious and balanced result, while also allowing for a single recovery period.
How long do the results of a brow lift last?
The longevity of brow lift results can vary depending on factors like age, skin quality, and lifestyle. Generally speaking, the results can last several years. Some patients choose to undergo touch-up procedures or combine their brow lift with nonsurgical treatments like BOTOX® to extend the lifespan of their results.
What are the risks associated with a brow lift?
Like any surgical procedure, a brow lift comes with its set of risks, although they are generally low when performed by an experienced surgeon like Dr. LaGrasso. Some potential risks include infection, adverse reaction to anesthesia, and issues with wound healing. It's important to discuss any health conditions or concerns you have during your consultation to minimize risks and ensure a successful outcome.
