Arm Lift or Liposuction? Which is Best for Sagging Arm Skin?
Everyone wants to be able to wear a T-shirt or tank top without feeling self-conscious about their arms. There are two cosmetic procedures that have been designed to help those suffering from these insecurities, but they both have significant differences in how they are performed, as well as what types of people they are meant to benefit. Board-certified plastic surgeon Jeffrey LaGrasso performs both of these operations in Miami, FL. At Jeffrey LaGrasso M.D., we're always happy to walk our patients through their ins and outs in order to help them make the decision that is best for their needs.
Is Liposuction Right for Me?
Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure designed to eliminate excess fatty tissue from targeted areas of the body, or in this case, the arms. The procedure solely removes fat, and cannot improve loose or sagging skin, making it ideal for those who have little to no skin laxity. In this way, the skin can return back to its initial position even after the fat has been removed from the arms. Due to this, the procedure is typically used only by younger patients who can confidently trust in their youthful, tighter skin.
Is an Arm Lift Right for Me?
Whether through weight loss, natural aging, or any number of other factors, our skin can become less and less firm. This eventually leads to sagging skin in various areas of the body, especially the arms. An arm lift — or brachioplasty — is a procedure, which can remove this excess skin from the upper arms in order to make your arms look tighter and younger. However, unlike liposuction, arms lifts cannot remove fatty tissues from the targeted areas. For this reason, we only recommend liposuction for patients who have already undergone their desired amount of weight loss.
Should I Receive Both?
If the benefits of both of these procedures sound appealing to you, it is possible to perform both liposuction and an arm lift in the same procedure in Miami, FL. Dr. LaGrasso will simply begin by removing the requested fat from the arms before proceeding with the arm lift. By receiving both procedures, patients are able to bypass the inherent restrictions of each option. Liposuction can remove fat, but not excess skin. Brachioplasty can remove excess skin, but not fat. Together, both of these goals are able to be met while achieving spectacular results.
This is easily achieved due to the fact that both procedures focus entirely on the lower section of the upper arm. This is due in large part because the outer surface of the arm is very hard to reach for skin or fat removal, and could potentially result in severe scarring. By concentrating on the lower part of the upper arm, we are able to remove a significant amount of fat/skin, while still being able to hide any scarring that may occur.
