Why You Should Not Sit On Your Brazilian Butt Lift Results

Many of the most beautiful backsides around have Brazilian butt lift surgery to thank for their stunning shape. Each year, more and more people turn to BBL surgery to achieve a fuller, rounder rear end and improved body proportions. Although the Brazilian butt lift has become a fairly routine procedure these days, it is still important for patients to understand that BBL is a surgical procedure that will require a healing and recovery period. Patients should also know what to do (and what not to do) during BBL recovery to ensure the best possible outcome. If you are thinking about enhancing your butt with BBL surgery, use the helpful information below from Miami, FL board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Jeffrey LaGrasso of Jeffrey LaGrasso MD to better understand what to expect after BBL surgery and how certain behaviors, like sitting or lying on your backside, can impact your final results.

How does BBL work?

Brazilian butt lift surgery is a body contouring procedure that involves a fat transfer – the process of removing excess fat from one or more areas of the body using liposuction and injecting it into the buttocks to enhance the patient’s curves and overall shape. Most often, BBL surgery is performed using general anesthesia, though it may be performed with local anesthesia and IV sedation in certain cases.

What to expect after BBL surgery

Almost immediately after Brazilian butt lift surgery, patients will be placed in compression garments to help with swelling at the liposuction sites and encourage a smooth, even result. Some discomfort and tenderness in the buttocks are expected, but this typically subsides after about 2 – 5 days, at which time patients will be able to resume light household activities. While preliminary changes to the body will be almost immediately obvious, the final results of BBL surgery can take several months to become apparent as the remainder of the swelling subsides and the newly transferred fat cells establish themselves in the buttocks. During the initial healing phase after BBL surgery (about 2 – 4 weeks), it is critical that patients avoid putting any direct pressure on the buttocks. Sitting, driving, and lying on the back should be strictly avoided until cleared by Dr. LaGrasso, and it may be recommended that the patient use a donut pillow or another device to alter their sitting position for several more weeks, redistributing pressure to the thighs.

Why can’t I sit after a BBL?

To become a long-term part of the buttocks, the fat cells transferred during BBL surgery must establish a blood supply in their new location. Applying any pressure to the fat cells during the first 2 – 4 weeks after a BBL can disrupt this process and ultimately destroy the cells, meaning patients won’t achieve the results they had initially hoped for. A small number of fat cells will not survive BBL transfer; this is an expected occurrence and is accounted for when calculating the amount of fat to harvest and transfer prior to surgery. Along with avoiding pressure on the butt after BBL, patients should practice proper BBL aftercare for the most pleasing and longest-lasting results possible. This includes:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Do not sit or lie on the buttocks for at least 2 – 4 weeks
  • Wear compression garments as directed
  • Do not smoke
  • Minimize alcohol consumption
  • Do not engage in strenuous physical exercise until cleared to do so
  • Maintain a stable, healthy weight

With an experienced surgeon and a healthy lifestyle, including a stable weight, the results of BBL surgery can keep patients looking their best for years to come.
