Patients who are considering a fat transfer to buttocks procedure can learn how it works during their first visit to our Miami, FL office. As with any surgery, it is important that you are informed about the whole process beforehand, including what to do after BBL surgery.

What is a BBL?

A fat transfer to buttocks procedure or BBL helps our patients achieve a shapelier, rounder butt. While many individuals turn to diet and exercise to give their butt the look they’re dreaming of, some choose to have this procedure with Dr. LaGrasso. It’s a great way to add volume and fullness with unwanted fat from other parts of your body. Liposuction removes fatty tissue from the hips, abdomen, upper thighs, or lower back, to name a few places. Once that process is complete, the extracted fat is purified and reinjected back into the buttocks with a grafting or transfer process via small incisions. Dr. LaGrasso will massage each fat injection to help each patient accomplish their desired shape and size.

How long is recovery after BBL?

Almost immediately after your Brazilian butt lift, you must wear a compression garment that will help minimize bruising and swelling. It also promotes proper blood flow while the body begins to heal. Underneath your compression garment, patients will have access to their liposuction sites with a bandage for proper cleaning and at-home care. Miami, FL patients can expect some discomfort in the donor areas used to harvest fat cells and in their buttocks. Recovery varies from patient to patient; however, most can expect to be up and walking around a day or two after their BBL surgery.

A general recovery timeline we give our patients includes:

  • Try light walking in 1 – 2 days

  • Avoid stretching or doing squats for at least three weeks

  • Return to work in about 2 – 3 weeks

  • Full recovery is in 3 – 4 weeks

  • Exercise programs, running, or yoga can be attempted in 4 – 6 weeks (or when you’ve been cleared by Dr. LaGrasso)

What to do after BBL surgery

During your follow-up appointment, Dr. LaGrasso can assess your progress and give any further instructions to help expedite your Brazilian butt lift recovery. Patients who have had BBL surgery must avoid sitting directly on their butt for at least three weeks. Anyone who puts pressure on the target area during recovery can cause the grafted fat to shift or move. This could affect your results. You must also sleep on your side or stomach for three weeks.
