How Long Will Fat Last After a Brazilian Butt Lift?

The Brazilian butt lift (BBL) is a popular procedure in the U.S. According to 2019 stats by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, a Brazilian butt lift is one of the millennials' most requested treatments. Helping you shape and contour your buttocks, board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Jeffrey LaGrasso uses fat from your thighs, stomach, or love handles and injects it into your rear end. After this procedure, you will have a shapelier behind and tighter figure. At Jeffrey LaGrasso M.D. in Miami, FL, we can help patients attain a beautiful body and fuller-looking buttocks. With proper care, your results can last a long time. Please call our office in Miami, FL to learn more about the Brazilian butt lift.

What is the Brazilian butt lift?

At Jeffrey LaGrasso M.D. in Miami, FL, a Brazilian butt lift transfers fat from another part of your body to enhance your buttocks' shape and size. Before undergoing a BBL, Dr. LaGrasso completes a thorough consultation to ensure this procedure is right for you. He will discuss your medical history, determine if you have enough fat for the transfer process, and select the donor sites. Next, patients receive a personalized surgical plan, which outlines the details and costs of the treatment.

On the day of your procedure, Dr. LaGrasso will begin by administering general anesthesia or IV sedation. Once you are comfortable, we perform liposuction on the donor areas, such as the stomach or love handles. To ensure your safety, we use a triple-wash antibiotic called P188, which sterilizes the tissue and helps remove fat from the body. The fat is placed in a centrifuge, purified, and injected into the buttocks. We inject the fat little by little until reaching the desired results. Overall, your procedure takes two hours to complete, and you can go home afterward. We will provide detailed aftercare instructions, but you should plan to take 2 – 3 weeks for recovery.

How long do your results last?

After your surgery, you will experience swelling and bruising near the buttocks and the donor sites. At first, your buttocks will look much fuller because your body needs time to get used to the new contours, and some fat grafts will not survive. Generally, about 80 % of the grafts survive, so we inject a higher amount at first to compensate for this natural process. However, as the fat grafts begin to settle, you should see the final results in 6 – 8 weeks. With proper care, your results can last for several years or, for some patients, decades. The longevity of your results depends on your body and proper care.

How to maintain fat after BBL

To help a higher amount of fat tissue survive, we recommend incorporating the following habits or aftercare directions into your routine. These include:

  • Using compression garments to encourage healing
  • Avoiding smoking
  • Reducing alcohol intake
  • Scheduling lymphatic massage appointments to reduce fluid retention
  • Maintaining a healthy diet
  • Reducing excess pressure on the buttocks during your healing
  • Taking short walks during the recovery period
